Also known as EEG biofeedback, neurofeedback (NFB) utilizes an electroencephalogram, a fancy word that translates from the Latin to “electric head picture.”
This “picture of the brain” allows the therapist to read the electrical activity occurring underneath the scalp generated by the brain. Once we have a clear picture of the brain, we design a custom-tailored training protocol to address the targeted symptoms. Through a consistent training regimen, you will be able to shift those frequencies towards their optimal ranges, and benefit from the long-lasting results.
NFB acts as a reward system for the brain to restore your brainwave patterns to a more optimal range of functioning. It is a non-invasive treatment that works toward improving the source of unwanted physical and mental health symptoms.
NFB differs from medicine in that it is designed to treat the issue at its core, whereas medications can only alleviate symptoms for as long as they are in your system simply by masking the initial problem.
NFB is effective because it helps the brain improve itself through neuroplasticity. Because of neuroplasticity, with NFB the brain is capable of reprogramming itself from the dysregulation found in the irregular brainwave activity seen in a range of conditions including ADHD, depression, anxiety, behavioral issues and sleep disorders.
Despite the thousands of studies over the past seven decades indicating the benefits of NFB as an effective treatment therapy, it is rarely being utilized as a standard protocol for treating these behavioral health disorders.
Pharmacological remedies have offered great results and are an indispensable component to modern medicine, but relying exclusively or too heavily on drugs, especially when other proven treatments are available, is not always the best or healthiest solution.
NFB attempts to resolve problems instead of temporarily suppressing them. Medications will never teach the brain to operate optimally on its own. They only help the brain to operate optimally when the medication is taken.
NFB is an effective treatment modality because it taps into the natural mechanisms that make a brain learn and grow and heal itself. In some ways, it is like weight-lifting. If you challenge a weak muscle to lift more weight than it is used to lifting and you repeat the exercise over and over, in time, the muscle develops the ability to lift the heavier weight.
In the same way, NFB therapy challenges certain areas of the brain to perform specific kinds of brain activity more effectively. Repeat the exercise over and over, and in time, the brain develops the ability to remain in a balanced brainwave state with less effort and for longer periods of time. The areas of the brain targeted for feedback and the specific kinds of brain activity chosen for development depend on presenting symptoms, conditions and the stated therapeutic goals of the individual client.
